Madeira is a fortified wine that has been made on a Portuguese island off the coast of Morocco since the fifteenth centrury. They are usually labeled as one of the following types, based upon the grape variety used in their production, in order from sweetest to driest: Malvasia (also known as Malmsey or Malvazia), Bual (or Boal), Verdelho and Sercial.
